‘A story unfolds: of music, in a thunderstorm: the people are present - the Proprietor of the cafe, still, at the doorway: the penguin children peeping: the land verdant and strong, the sky dark: the fish of gold, held in a dancing monkey’s hand, and in a dancing woman’s heart: the beautiful violin: the strong piano hands. And the maestro, who conducts, while a small penguin person writes Hope on the wall. We are all together, in a life…… the sound waves sing.’

This final work in our limited edition set of prints was made for Union Café,  The PCO’s last studio album in their formation with Simon Jeffes before he died in 1997. This work unifies many elements we have seen thus far in this collection. We can see community and joy, we are placed in the heart of the action and in the background we see hints of the Penguin Cafe universe brought to life in Young’s first work in this series from 1976. Furthermore, this work also brings in many elements of playfulness. The Proprietor now looks in from outside as if he is looking in on at the work that he has inspired. The children playfully peek in. There is a monkey holding a fish, dancing on a piano. To quote Young “Hope is on the wall. We are all together in a life”.
