‘Dancer with Fish’ from Still Life at the Penguin Cafe, 1990, oil on canvas by Emily Young

This work was the key image for ‘Still Life at the Penguin Cafe, a ballet choreographed for the Royal Opera House by David Bintley using the PCO’s music. This work captures a tableau similar to the opening of the ballet with The Great Auk starting alone, to be swiftly joined by other penguins and then dancers in a great ballroom. We can see in the background another figure and a boy. The wall texture, trees and water behind the figure look to be from Young’s earlier piece ‘Signs of Life’ implying a relationship between the two works. Emily Young
